I'm no expert but I would think 10 seconds would be plenty of time. Did you have the cups directly over the water intake screens? Most times when I play with mine water comes out the hole before I start it due to the water pressure. Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

As long as you have the muffs on correctly and enough water running there isn't a concern to run longer then ten seconds.

Its cold out so give it a little longer.

If you think its taken too long then shut it down, pull the cover

off and feel the heads. Seems OK then start it up and look for the tell tale. Feel the heads and use your nose. If you sense things are getting hot shut it down again.

Make sure you have the water turned up enough. I had the same thing happen. Couldn't get it to pee. I turned the water up so that it was coming out all around the muffs, started it up, and it started peeing.

My Mercury 50hp 4 stroke motor would not pee out the telltale hole after I replaced the impeller in the pump. I was worried and took it to a Merc dealer and he said that is very common. I don't know about the larger HP motors but its true on the smaller ones.

When I took it to the lake, it pumped fine and the alarm stopped. I won't trust the ears to run water for the pump again.

You didn't let it run long enough. The Verado has a thermostat, and the motor will not pee until it's warmed up a bit and the thermostat opens. The Verado will also alarm if it gets hot, so if you didn't hear any beeping, you're fine.
I had this conversation with my Verado tech last fall so we looked at the Verado flow chart and the tell tale or pee hole is not affected by the thermostat. My Verado pees instantly when I start it in 30 degree weather.
