mainbutter
I've been intrigued by kite fishing. I've always wanted to try some kite fishing from shore whenever I've been down in florida, but never got around to it.Has anyone ever heard of it being tried in MN? I wonder if it would be productive fishing suckers for pike or musky.
Northlander
Im not sure is it even legal in MN.?
mainbutter
why not? As long as you kept to the 1 hook per line policy, surely it's fine right?
traveler
I'm guessing it would be legal here, but checking with the DNR would be a smart move. My thoughts...I've never kite fished, but have read about it a fair bit, and the charter company I like in Cabo has started useing them lately, although we didn't need them this last trip (last week. First, i like less gear rather than more, unless it gives a decided advantage. My understanding of kites is they will present a surface bait to line shy fish, and do it farther from the boat than tradional methods. I know they use them down in PV fishing big, line shy tuna, where they sometimes have to go to light fluro line to get bit. Now I don't know if thats the kites only advantage, but at that, well, pike or muskies just aren't very line or boat shy. I guess I don't see it, especially from a minimalist tackle angle. Maybe theres more to them I don't know about of course...lets see if anyone else has any insight.
Northlander
I seem to remember reading a post that said balloon fishing wasnt leagal and I would think thats pretty close to kite fishing but I sure could be wrong. I bet there is hardly anyone who has even thought about trying it in MN. I think Ill stick to my offshore boards.

rcook72
We used to Kite fish for sails off of Ft. Lauderdale. For us it was the presentation of the live bait thrashing and breaking the surface. We always had our bait skipping and bounceing with the swells and gusts. Fished over a reef you would get kings and cudas launching out of the water at the baits when they were even 3 feet out of the water. Thats a cool idea to get your bait out further for shore fishing as long as you get the right wind.
mainbutter
I've been looking into it more and more, and yeah the right wind can really help, but I think they even make kites designed to tack into the wind, which is certainly worth looking into. Gunnin4fish
I've heard of a guy who used to fish on White Bear using a remote-control model boat to both get his line out and circulate the lure in various patterns. There was the typical release rig for when the fish took the lure.I wish I could talk to that guy to ask him what he would do when a muskie bit on his model boat
