Rivernut
On the river yesterday, fishing was good until motor started running real rough. Seemed as though it was loading up. Noticed the pee was not shooting water, but smoke or steam!!!! Impeller for sure, hoping no more damage was done. Grrrr
Eric Wettschreck
At least it happened now and not in June!!!You have plenty o time. Relplace your water pump and I'd do a quick compression test. If things are looking good you prolly dodged a bullet.Good thing you saw the pee stream, or lack there of, when you did and didn't just keep on going. Rivernut
I'm doing commpression test 1st. If that is bad, I don't see the point in replacing water pump. It's an '87 25 Yamaha. Not wanting to put a lot of money in it. Thing is, it ran rough, cleared up, then rough again. It ran terrible for at least 10 minutes b4 I realized the pee hole. Idled fine, just terrible when opening up throttle. Got a bad feeling about this one. Can't afford another motor. See what I find today. Rivernut
Compression was 90 and 89. Season may be salvageable after all.
S.D. Ice Angular
What should compression numbers be??
crappiebuster
Usually if theyre close to each other your okay.
Rivernut
For that old of a motor, 90 is decent. As Crappiebuster said, even #'s are good.
boatfixer
Seems like no major damage anyway. Stick an impeller in it and try it. I use a Bend-a-light to have a look in the cylinder, if I cant get a good look, maybe pull the head. Those even numbers are a good sign as the others have mentioned. Most of the time with an over heat situation the top cylinder will be the low one.
Rivernut
Brought it in to have impeller done. I could not get the shift rod disconnected, did not want to wreck it. He did compression test. 115 & 110. Good enough for me. See how it runs when I get it back.

Rivernut
Got it back today. He said the impeller was missing 4 of the 6 fins. And he also said the cylinders looked good and it runs fine. $40.00, I had already bought the impeller. Im back in the game for a couple more weeks. bassNspear
Thank god you didnt hurt anything. Good idead to change them every year!
harvey lee
I replaced my impeller twice a season. I fish the river and when the water is low, she picks up junk and san and small pebbles.I now do it myself so the damage is very little to the pocket book. Rivernut
I will from now on. I just got this motor this spring from my brother inlaw, not known for maintenance. Any other motor I've owned it has been done at least every other year.
