CJH
Was at the store looking at shells/pheasant loads and wanted to do some upgrading this year when I have to use steel/nontox. I know these are primarily designed for waterfowl, but I was wondering if anybody had used the Black Cloud or HeviSteel for Roosters? Any feedback or experience? Just looking for some better killing power when I have to use steel. I hate dealing with wounded/cripples.Any feedback/insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!CJH
Neighbor_guy
There is report out that is a good read. It basicaly concludes that #2 Steel is the best bet when it comes to pheasants at all ranges (when steel is needed). Do a search on "steel shot for pheasants" to see it. In my (somewhat limmitied) experience, #4 Rem Nitro Steel has worked well.I think an once or more of 4,3,or 2 in that 1450-1550fps range should do you well. Black Cloud, Speed shock, Nitro Steel, Fasteel, they all make one that fits the bill. I dont think you can go wrong with any of them. It just becomes a matter of how much money you want to spend on shells.
pureinsanity
I use #4 and #5 lead for roosters. #2 when using steel.
CJH
Thanks for the replies. I was trying to get at whether people who have used them liked them, and whether they thought the premium over the standard steel was worth it. Not really a debate on shot size or lead vs steel.Anyone have experience with the shells for pheasants?
mwal
I haven't used Blackcloud on roosters yet but on ducks in the decoys it patterns to tight and mutilate a few mallards it is designed for long range shooting with a special shot cup. It worked well at 40 yards. So if you are shooting over a flusher it may be fine. On close shots I would just use standard #2 steelMwal
