Duck Hunting

Recommended Posts

Conditions were tough both days. THICK fog didn't lift til 11 on saturday. Never saw birds til they were about 75 yds out and IDing them was all but impossible. Ended with 6 greenies 4 honks and 1 aleutian (hard to believe??).

Sunday we were beat with 40 mph wind. 2 guys ended with 9 mixed bag ducks and 3 honks.

Overall pretty disappointing weekend, and the most frustrating part was trying to ID ducks which all seemed to be brown. 2 redheads and a nice widgeon were the only birds with decent color at all yet.

Yea, the fog was definetly 'fun' this weekend, 75 yards? we were lucky to see them at 40 yds.

It was an below average bird count from us, 4 of us dropped 18 sat, and 20 sunday a mix bag of mallards, gads, and teal.

After a few early jittery misses i got my stride back after the first hour, while my buddy was on the other side of the slough 4 birds came in, they appeared to be gadwells, and teal, I pulled a quad, the teal was so dumb it landed, and gave me time to reload.

I was so excited that I just went 4-4 then as I picked up my 'gads' 3 of them were smiling at me, 3 shovelers and 1 teal. I knew my buddies weren't going to let me live that one down.

Overall very fun weekend, by far my favorite day of the year!

I was talking to a MN CO coupel years ago, just [PoorWordUsage]-ing about duck hunting, and id'ing ducks and how my brother got a scoter , pretty rare in MN where we hunt... how my brother wasn't sure what it was exactly, as it flew like a can, but he thought it was a scoter...

The CO says, "You mean he didn't properly ID it before he shot it?!?!?!?" I stood there not sure what to say.... he laughed and said "I am kidding you smile " He said, "I hunt in North Dakota, and they have those magically ducks over there, they are nice big greenhead mallards, but when they hit the ground they magically turn into spoonies" hahaha! Was pretty funny listening to him give himself carp over his own id'ing smile

It's monsoon season out here today... been raining pretty hard all day today.

Please keep a couple of things in mind when you head out this way (residents & non-residents alike):

1) It's harvest season, so if you're going to park near an approach, please pull off the approach or into the ditch if at all possible to prevent blocking access to a field that needs to be harvested.

2) If the road looks soupy / muddy please don't rut it up! Farmers depend on these roads to make their money... please try and find a alternative route to your destination.

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
