Displaying Agates ?

Wondering how some of the agate hunters, out there, display your finds or some different ways you have seen them displayed. Glass shelves, lights, etc. Mine line the window sills or are resting in buckets or boxes.

I only have three in the house to see. Everything else is in buckets or see through plastic jars. I want to make a coffee table with glass over a bed of lakers..that would look really nice with light underneath.

A friend of mine has a bunch of nice ones in a large glass jar inside a livingroom cabinet..looks great!

However you display them, they look very cool when mineral oil is rubbed in. Turns them luminous.

The most striking agates I've seen were not tumbled/polished, either, but were broken parts of agate with both the translucent outside and the striated core visible.

Yup..mineral oil does the magic on top shelf eggs. You can also heat them in the oven and it helps absorb the oil.

Most of mine reside happily at the bottom of a fish tank.

I have used a illuminated vertical display case before with glass shelves. I know you can buy them but they are easy to make. If you have thin cut agate slabs a light behind the slabs looks really neat. Getting them cut and then polishing is the way to go. Polishing is easy but takes some time. Though, I do like the look of a complete agate.

FYI, some minerals will fade or darken when exposed to light for long periods of time. Agates don't have that problem. Also, don't forget to label your specimens so you know when and where you found them.

dont ever cut big agates!!!i am a extreme collector and have alot of big nice ones.It greatly decreases the value!!i have all mine on a shelf and bought agatestands whicch allow you tro place it any where

For smaller agates, I took a picture frame (which had about 3/4 inch space from glass to glass) and filled it with agates, and put another piece of glass on the back side. It looks really neat in the window when the sun shines through!

Great idea Kate...the sun coming through would look nice. If you could get mineral oil or even water in there with them...it would really bring out the colors. You got me thinking
