What do you mean by no stud? No stud in line with the hole?

How about taking a flat piece of wood the length of the distance between your studs, attach it to the two studs nearest to the hole (horizontally), and then attaching the rattle reel to that? That way you can mount the RR anywhere on the piece of wood to get it lined up with the hole.

Mine were mounted like that and near the ceiling where they were out of the way.
