Abandoned farmsteads

Interesting article in last week's outdoor news about racoons, skunks and possum and abandoned farm buildings. Looked as if they were prime problems for nesting success based on the study that was published.

i read that article also, it was interesting; Delta continues to push with the predator stuff. Plenty of old woodpiles shelter belts, fence lines and such too

It is an interesting observation linking abandoned buildings with increased predator abundance. We have extremely high skunk abundance, and raccoon abundance appears to be increasing as well, along with low and declining duck abundance. I theorize that it may be related to modern logging practices where bulldozed slash piles are everywhere throughout the forest. These large piles seem to be prime denning and hibernation habitat.

the ducks need to start somewhere as far as nesting sites go and DU is focusing more on habitat; there has to be habitat 1st, then the control after there is established nesting grounds.

the DU vs. Delta stuff is ridiculous, they should be working more together...
