Gulp Alive

Recommended Posts

I use it most of the time and have ok luck. I only get to fish and hour or two here and there so there is no point in me buying live bait to only use a couple minows or leaches

Exactly - I started using it last year in Canada and it seemed to catch as much or more fish then the live bait and the fish size was larger. Have used it a lot on Pool 2 also with good results. Eliminates a lot of the sheephead and catfish bites on the river. I use it as much for the ease in use then anything else. I am jig fishing almost 100% of the time so have no knowledge on using it rigging.

Not sure if it is better but its close. It saves me money and a trip to the bait shop giving me more time on the water.

If your a fathead guy - I like the 3" minnows Emerald Shiners or Smelt.

I would suggest getting a bucket with assorted colors to find out what works best for you.

I use the three inch minnows on a jig head with a steady and very slow retrieve for walleyes. If I jig or twitch it I seem to catch more crappies and bass. I've seen it trigger walleye bites when live leeches won't work.

I always have Gulp Alive and other plastics in my boat ..... I almost never have live bait along any more. I jig much more than I rig or pull spinners and plastics are great for jigging ---- if I was going someplace where there's a strong rigging or spinner bite (ie. mille lacs) I would bring both.

I'm going to Canada this weekend and bought some gulp bait. I didn't buy the alive just the plastic pouch. Sales person told me it is the same stuff just once it's open it doesn't last long.

Generally, I've been a big fan of Gulp smelt minnows up at LOTW. However, over his year of fishing up there, I've been getting much better bites/hits with live bait over Gulp. This year they nibble on Gulp and hit the live bait better.

I use it and have had some success, living on the NY-Ct border, live bait is a pain, if i buy it in NY, it has to be certified and i can have it for just 7 days, dead or alive and if i buy the bait in Ct. I can not bring it back into NY. no uncertified bait can be transported in a motor vehicle and towing a boat is a great way to get stopped for inspection.

oh... i have found that the key to using gulp alive, is "matching the hatch"

each gulp alive color has its own scent to match that species of fish. so if smelt are in the lake, use smelt. black shad, use black shad. etc.

im not saying this is the onlyway it works. but it certainly helps

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
