4TH Annual Red Cedar School's out extravaganza

Recommended Posts

for the fourth year in a row, my dad, brother and I have taken a few days and camped out at the county campground on red Cedar lake near birchwood. The state has been goofing with minimum lengths for this lake for walleyes since we started fishing here. This year, all walleyes under 18" must be immediately released. Every time we went out over the 3 days of fishing we caught about 25-30 walleyes between 14 and 17.5". It was great fishing, just not good eating of fish.....

We ventured one day into balsam lake and found a really nice weed bed and caught some smallies and I hooked a big northern that threw the lure at the boat, but it was big.....

Evening time found us on the humps between the campground and the resort, anchored, with slip bobbers and leeches. each night we were out there we caught fish, those boats trolling around didn't catch much, but everyone bobber fishing caught fish.

we only took a couple photo's

Me and my almost 20" smallmouth: it was a fat little toad too...........

New equipment used on this trip was a new prop (old one was damaged last year on Red Cedar) that got me, my dad and brother going 26.1 mph on gps. Last year we were lucky if we got 22....I also bought a new Frabill net, a conservation series with the rubber coated no knot net and the telescoping handle from 3' to 6'. We used it a lot and it was very convenient to store and deploy as well. We never stuck a hook in the net, and we netted almost all of our fish. Maybe next year we will actaully get to keep some of the walleyes we catch. The bait shop in Haugen was not a bait shop but an ice cream parlor that sold leeches. Got the rest of their leeches and they were good leeches. Breakfast at Haugen was awesome, Vman, you were right about the Lona's corner cafe, any cafe that has a cheese menu is definitely worth a trip back

Actually Cooter, is was at the end of a 17 foot flat that I had no idea was there until we had left your spot and were cruising up to a couple of diffent ones. I marked it well and I think it might actually be a great spot for ice fishing during the early morning and evening bites, if that lake is any good for ice fishing that is

The bait shop in Haugen is just starting out and in the process of getting more stuff all the time. yea they have ice cream but they have minnows , crawlers , leech's etc and a small amount of tackle.I get my leech's there as I order by the pound and get the best deal from them .

    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
