I kept a 28" once. I had a double on Lake Michigan fishing solo in big waves. I netted the first one and threw it in the boat and picked up the second rod, then landed the second one. I knew that the first one was pretty big, but getting bounced around and having a second fish on I didn't realize just how big. Unfortunately, it had a treble hook in the gills and was bleeding all over so I kept it. I double split the steaks in half and it tasted just fine.

I think the original post by Jim was assuming that it's not badly bleeding. If you were going to mount it anyway, than fine, mount it (personally I would not). But don't mount it just because it's gut hooked...even with a jig. Cut the line and do a little boatside CPR. It should be fine. Don't put it in the livewell unless you have already decided to keep it!

This is why I don't like slots you don't get a choice, and why you have happy birds on the water. We were up on leech last week end and it starting to happen, dead slot fish are showing up on the water. And I bet they look good at time of release, maybe.
