GPS - Speed Measurement

10 posts in this topic

Hey guys. A friend of mine gave me his brand new, unused Garmin 12 GPS this winter since he received it as a gift and had never opened it in 4 years. What's up with that, huh? smile.gif Anyway, I've used it on Gull and Mille Lacs a few times this year and have had problems getting an accurate speed reading when trolling. Even when I know I'm moving at a fairly good clip (1.5-3mph probably), it still reads 0.0 mph. It would sure would be nice to have at least .5 increments to measure my trolling speed.

I know this unit is about 4-5 years old and am wondering if I need to upgrade to get this functionality? Is it WASS that provides the newer GPS units with more accurate speed readings?

Also, I've been looking at getting an eTrex Legend. Any good/bad reviews from owners out there? I'd be curious to hear your experiences - there's some good prices out on hsolist for those babies.

Thanks,
Blaze

You get what you pay for. This is verrry accurate when choosing a GPS. The legend is a great unit and you won't be sorry buying that little beauty. I have to caution you though, I would'nt get it off hsolist-buy it new, you'll be a lot happier in the long run that way. Happy fishin.

My E-Trex is two years old and reads speed in tenths of a mile per hour.

In other words, it goes from 1.1 to 1.2 to 1.3 mph, etc. I use it all the time trolling, and you can rig it using a 12V converter to your deep cycle battery. If you just stay with the 2 AA batteries, it'll give you about 20 hours if you don't use the lit screen much.

It's waterproof and it floats. No, I didn't read that off the box, I found out the hard way.

My first one, after about a year, started shutting off without warning for no good reason, and I returned it to Cabela's for exchange for a new one, free of charge. Been great since then.

Hard to find a better unit for just over $100. If I had $300 to spend, I'd get a mapping unit, but the E-Trex really is everything I need.

The ones I was looking at on hsolist actually were new, but after going back and looking again, I'd probably only be saving $10-15 after shipping, etc. and Garmin's $50 mail in rebate they still have on right now...

Shouldn't I be getting a more accurate reading of speed with the Garmin 12 though? I'm pretty disappointed in that. Any 12 owners out there that can speak to this problem? Maybe it's just me?!?!

I've had my Garmin 12 for about 3 years and it works fine for me. It measures in tenths of a mile per hour when traveling above one mile an hour. It reads 0.0 when going less than one mile an hour. Also the trip numbers read in miles and tenths up to 100 miles distance then it is just in miles.

My 12 works fine for trolling speeds. Under 1 mph though it does read zero. I like it and have had it for years.

I guess I just need to take it out and play with it some more. I would've sworn we were doing a good 2+ mph the day I was trying it, but I just might be losing my mind too smile.gif

I'll check it out and see if I can pick up the speed readings at 1.1, 1.2, 1.3....

Thanks for the input.

Tight lines,
Blaze

Blaze:

Check to make sure that you have your pinning feature turned off. Once you turn this off, it should give you readings all the way down to .1 MPG.

Try going to garmin's web site and see if there is a upgrade to the program file in the GPS. I know Magellan up grades the software for their units.

Thanks Jeff - that's the kind of info I was looking for! I'll give it a shot and report back to let you know if it fixed the problem.

    • I have been meaning to try to stick a yote too whenever I was out I hoped one would show up instead of a turkey.
    • should have set up in the grass! Uncle went back for evening set up at a pinch point hen and tom came through to go back to roost but no shot!
    • Beside the fun of fooling a turkey and sticking it witj my bow, this is why I love turkey hunting. Slow smoked with apple on the pellet smoker.
    • Does anyone have a water driven backup sump pump? They look like the cats meow if you live in town. Or does code even allow them? If they are not allowed what is the best battery backup ones?
    • Got out Saturday morning. Perfect weather. Jakes and hens. Had a new group of 6 hens come in with no tom or jakes.   Did have a yote come out of nowhere right into my dekes. 12 yards. Just as I was drawing on it , it must have scented me and booked. A second yote crossed about 50 yards out. Sticking a yote is on my bucket list.   All in all a great morning.
    • Good season Wild, onto next year. Should be some changes but I don't expect us to do anything crazy. Need to sign Granlund and Nino and that will use up a lot of our cap space. Can't afford Hanzel and possibly Haula and Vegas will be taking a player off our hands. I'm more interested to see who can sustain or step up their scoring next year or if anyone regresses. Granlund, Coyle, Nino, Zucker, Dumba, Spurgeon and Brodin all had career years, those are good problems to have. They showed us a lot but I think they still have room to grow and that is what we need. We have a nice cast of vets but they are likely too old to lead us to a cup, they would be in more supporting rolls. Hopefully our now seasoned young core and continue to build on their impressive seasons. Always disappointing to lose, even worse when you can't score against your old coach but I like the our team and hopefully we can keep getting better.
    • I'm not the most techy 40yr old out there, so I will try to explain what I'm looking to do and hopefully someone can point me in the direction I need to go. I have a cabin in the Chippawa National Forrest, no phone at the cabin and our cell phones dont work at the cabin either. My teenage son wants to take the wheeler and go riding alone. I worry he's going to get lost or if the wheeler breaks down he can't call my cell for help. When we drive my truck around; the gps in it works all the time.  I know I can put a GPS app on my sons phone so he can track his route in reverse to get back to the cabin. But what if he breaks down?  Does anyone know if there is a gps app that I could "pair" up me and my son's phone so I can see where he is at? kill 2 birds with one stone per say, he can use it to navigate himself on the wheeler and I can see where he's at incase I need to rescue him.  Thanks for the help.
    • Hit the Red River over the weekend for the 2nd time this spring. First outing wasn't great with a handful of smaller cats all under 10lbs. This weekend was a different story as we ended up with 15 cats Friday night. 5 over 10lbs, 2 of which were high teens fish. All caught on cut river bait.  Cats were on the shallow side of the river. Water was high and flowing pretty good. All fish were caught and released. Great night of fishin w no bugs to bother us and very nice weather! Gonna give it another whirl soon in a boat this time. Have a look!!
    • I've never tried my booya poppin pad crashers Yet but are they really bad or just not as good? Just wondering.
