Depends. I've got an Ion auger. When I was drilling into 18 inches, the shavings were getting very close to the powerhead. If you're drilling into an ice heave, you can add a few inches as well.

I want to keep the shavings and slush away from my electric powerhead, so I am putting my extention on.

In all fairness, the Ions are a tad bit shorter than a standard gas auger too.

Bring it, be glad if you don't need it.
