Varmint Hunting

LOL!!! I bet the coyotes you hunt for are thinking there is a whole family of animals over there. Or what in the H E double hockey sticks is going on over there. Either way they are curious. I hunt in northern minn. North of Bemidiji. Lots of coyotes and fox around there. I will try these things and see if I can't get a few. I also heard to put a dead rabbit on fishing line about one hundred yards away and drag it too you. Real slow and twitch it. Has anyone heard this?

Decoys can help. My current model is a squirrel skin, mounted on a piece of an old fiberglass fishing rod. The rod was spraypainted white to match the snow, and I've got 50 feet of line on it. One little tug gives plenty of movement. A friend uses a piece of deer hide, and I've seen the featherflex bunny decoys (but never tried one).
I don't use the decoy all of the time, mostly because there are some set-ups where I would have to expose myself in order to get it into position.

Anyone gone out and gotten one of those
new Hornaday 17 rimfire magnums yet??
I can't wait to get one of these things
in my hands!! So far they are only in long
guns, but I bet they will soon get out a pistol or two going.

Early tests, show fine accuracy out to 140 yards on ground squirrels. Amazing, since we are talking a rimfire cartridge here!! I have
a nice Marlin 22 mag, but I feel a new purchase coming on soon. I think this new
cartridge will fit in fine, when I don't feel
like lugging around the 22-250 or 270. Or
even for some hi-power can shooting, etc.

Has anyone got any firsthand info on these
guns yet,please let me know,thanks....

My buddy has one. We never got out last year but he says he has used it successfully on yotes. This year I hope to get out a few times. The hardest part is having a place to go.

Anyone here going crow hunting in March?
I have never been, but a couple of my friends(also rookies) are thinking of going.
Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for this early season.

Thanks,
Nels

Nels, find a small town dump/landfill that you can shoot (with permission) hope for some snow, camo up and have fun. There's a season on them now so you'd better check on that. Up here in N.W. MN. when bird season opens the first thing in the truck is the electric call and tapes for crows!!!

sarge... i coon hunted for 22 years in martin county. i havent hunted the last 2 falls now because of a divorce and now being a singledad of 4 daughters...only 2 still at home..thought i would share a very rememberable experience with you.about 6 years ago a buddy and i were out coonin and we had 3 dogs chase a coon into a dredge ditch culvurt.the diameter at the opening must have been about 4 foot..1 of the dogs that had went in was mine and the other 2 was my buddys dogs..i asm a patch hunter with shallow running dogs...my dog came back out in 1/2 hour.it took 9 days before his 2 dogs came out.we had checked with the county on the dredge ditch and found out it went for 9 miles...arrrrrrrrgggggghhhhh.lol 9 days later we was talking on the phone and figured it was getting to be a hopeless situation.we had gone in that culvurt about 3-4 miles.it got smaller in diamater the farther in you went.i had even made a culvurt buggy out of an old trike and some old bike tires..we had a farmer watching the area for us.on the night of the 9th day he called and said your dogs are here...and they were very hungry..the next night we took them 2 dogs out hunting again.talk about dedication...we hunted a tree line between 2 fields...the coon ran up by the road and through a culvurt and them 2 dogs didn`t hesitate to go right in it...now thats dedication. smile.gif

    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
