Towing a boat with a Honda Civic

MplsFisher

Question

I have a 2008 Honda Civic. Recently I was offered free access to a small boat (14ft aluminum with with 25hp, trailer, etc). I was wondering if anyone has tried towing a small boat like this with a similar sized car. The owners manual says I can tow up to 1000lbs with 100lbs tongue weight, but it might invalidate the warranty (I have to check with the dealership first, obviously). Should I bother getting a hitch for the car or is this a terrible idea?

Yeah, you can't compare a midsize to a compact, that's night and day.

Could you do it? Sure. Should you? No. If you have to stop fast or if its really windy out, are you going to be able to control it? You are not only putting your life at stake but everybody else's on the road as well.

I have done a lot of crazy stuff in my day, but you learn from it. Buy or borrow something bigger when you need to tow.

Yep, plus it's a Toyota winkgrin

I used to pull my (bigger than average) 14fter with my wifes RAV4. It worked great until the river ramps started greasing up with a little mud. It only took getting stuck one time to scrap the idea and buy a 4WD.
