half-dutch
Annie Battle looks to be a success story that provides some proof that dramatically reduced human harvest increases panfish size, even in small lakes that have a reputation for overpopulated, stunted fish. IIRC Annie Battle has had a cyclical reputation between huge numbers of dinks resulting in very low fishing pressure but with a return of the heavy harvest as panfish size recovers. The idea is to facilitate the size recovery and this time to maintain it. Looks to me like it is working. I like the idea of lakes being managed for trophy panfish, and even tighter harvest controls may be needed in a number of places, especially on smaller waters that are easily accessible. If they can keep up the size in Annie Battle this time, then there is solid evidence that panfish size is closely related to the amount of human harvest allowed, and there is a chance that all "cyclical" lakes can be managed for trophy panfish. We may very well also see even tighter statewide limits and size restrictions, which IMO are called for anyway.
