Bucktail Making?

Recommended Posts

How hard is it to make your own bucktails? I know this has been covered before, there are a few good posts HERE and HERE but I'm still not quite sure what I'd be getting myself into. How difficult is it to tie the marabou? Has anyone make up a picture tutorial on that yet, or know where one is on the web? Thanks for any help!

1 feather at a time with 'bou and you'll get the hang of it. Tear down a couple bucks you don't use, rebuild, then go get the materials and start from scrath. Otherwise consider pre-tied bucktails/trebles that you can assemble yourself.

You'll learn more through trial and error and a basic flytying manual or video than anything else, there are many ways to do it, spacing is the most important factor.

tying 'bou really isn't that tough. just tedius. like mentioned above it's one at a time and in stages. i'd suggest tying on coils, using thin thread, and coating the final wrap (the finished head) with epoxy. and buy cheapo equipment at first untill your sure you want to tie your own and never buy another one. you can start for about 100 bucks, but that's about as minimal as you can get unless you re-use bad baits you have for parts. on a 2'' coil there should be barely any coil showing when your done. start at one end and with every time you fill an area move only a 1/4'' max and do anther area all the way around so on and so forth. snip excess quill tips before starting a new row. i haven't seen the cd mentioned but that would be a great idea. keep in mind some of us tie way different than the next guy so always keep an open mind for new things you might want to try. keeps it fun, at least i think so. happy tying wink
