BoxMN
I have one of those little ornamental pine trees, can't recall the name. Last winter it got pretty burned on the south side, so this year I wrapped it in burlap. Will see how that went soon... But it got me wondering, as I have lots of small pine and spruce at cabin, and two of them that I planted last year were showing signs of "burn" or what I call it anyway, the yellowing of needles. One is an Austrian pine and another a Norway pine. So I threw burlap over them and a few others.Should I do this or just leave them be? Maybe "burned" because they are so small, or maybe because I just transplanted them last fall... Most of my red and white pines are doing great, but they are all bigger. All my spruces are doing great, deer don't get them and they seem to weather better when small, but my larger pines do great. Thanks for any tips and info. Wanderer
Box,I'm thinking your small ornamental pine might be a Dwarf Alberta Spruce? If it is, make sure you wrap it every year.I left the burlap off last year and paid the price. It seems like the smaller, more delicate evergreens burn the easiest. The advice I got from here was to feed them with Mir-a-cid from Miracle Grow in the spring. It worked pretty well.If you can run your cupped hand down the branches and the needles fall off, you've probably lost that branch for good. But if some or all stay on, they'll probably come back.Good luck.
leechmann
I have several Blue Spruce trees that were transplanted 2 years ago. They are showing signs of snow burn too. I'd be very interested in knowing the answer to your question.
