seasoning cast iron cookware & proper cleaning

Does anyone know the best way to reseason cast iron cookware? I tried it but my pans turned out sticky. Also, I was told to never use soap on the seasoned pans, and only wipe them out. Is that right?

Thanks

Wipe them out then put some cooking oil on a rag and wipe it down with that to re-season If you washed it in soap, I would put water in it, bring to a boil and see if it creates suds, if it does dump the water and do it again and again until clean. Let pan dry and cool, then reheat and wipe it down with olive oil inside and out. Just don't get the pan so hot it starts smoking. The more you cook/use itand wipe it down with oil the better it becomes. My pan has not been washed in 10 years, never got sick food taste great. I have 1 pan for eggs and 1 for everything else. The egg one, the eggs slide right out.

I have gotten several nice pans and a big dutch oven from garage sales before that have been sticky. i took steel wool to them until i got down to the real metal. then i oil em um with a thin coat of crisco just enough to make it shine but no thick spots of it then its into the oven with them at 300 for an hour. for a fresh season or reseason i will coat and bake twice. and no never use soap on it, just wash it out with warm water and a rag or a scrubbie if needed (ive used sand in the boundry waters after large fish frys) just make sure you wipe it with oil after washing. ive also had mine for a very long time and all are in peak condition with no stickyness

i forgot to mention dont go to nuts scrubbing it or you will take of the seasoning and you will need to reseason

ive also heard you dont want to cook tomatoes or other acidic foods in cast unless its well seasoned because it will react with the cast iron ive never had a problem and i cook things with tomatoes in my dutch and big pan all the time. i do know if you leave tomatoe stuff in your dutch over night you will have to reseason

I love my cast. I was told not to use the cast on my glass top kitchen range, but I like my cast a lot more than that range. Cast on glass for me.

Every time I go to a remote cabin, the cast is certain to be washed with soap. So it's off to the boiling, rinse, boil, rinse, oil, heat, cool, oil, heat, cool, and we're ready for cooking. You'll learn quickly the benefits of cast!!!

My Dad used to cook with Cast all the time when I was growing up, however he never tauget me ( Or as a kid, I just didn't listen ) about how to take care of the pan. I have never been able to keep a pan nice. Thanks to everyone for all the advice. I Think I will have to dig the pan out of the camping supplies, Clean and reseason it.

Thanks Again!!!!!
