I was just wondering what are some of the most unique hunting dogs you guys have ever seen, heard of, or owned? Such as breeds other than your typical hunting dogs. Anyone heard of a Labradoodle that hunts? are they a trainable breed?

I have a 77 year old friend with a little black curly haired mutt, that has some Terrier in it. This Mutt is getting old now but it hunts about anything from Pheasants, Coon, Rabbit, Squirrel, and Ducks. It has tried Geese but they are to big to drag in more than one. (you just felt sorry for the poor thing) He has a German Short Hair now (brother to my Short Hair)and spends LOTS of time with his dogs and they are just unbelievable to hunt with. So there is the KEY... Spend time with whatever you get or have for a dog. Here is a pic of my girl, KayDee The Pheasantnater.KD2008.jpg

I have a Lab/german sheppard/beagle mix that is a diehard hunter. He has two seasons under his belt so far and my buddies and I figured he's already found/retrieved over 150 ducks, 30 plus pheasants, 20 plus grouse, and about 6 geese. Not too shabby for a mut. smile

I hunted with a guy that owned a labradoodle, which he took with on the hunt. Nice dog, but it wouldent hunt worth a [PoorWordUsage], he was more interested in playing with my dog than finding birds. I dont think the guy trained him to hunt though. Standard poodles were bred too hunt, and if you get one from a reputable breader you can get a good dog. My aunt has a standerd poodle and I know that thing could hunt if it was trained. That dog will play fetch with its ball all day, and if you trick him and throw the ball in the woods he will literally search for hours until he finds the ball.

My cousin has a standard poodle that he hunts grouse with. They had to get rid of thier lab because of allergy issues so he bought the poodle. If you can take the ribbing you get from your hunting buddies at camp poodles are an option for a family with dog allergies.

I say this because the day before a hunting trip his buddies kidnapped the dog and took it to the groomer and had the groomer give it the "classic" poodle look and put pink bows in her ears. That was funny
