Home Air Conditioning Question???

SapperACE

Recommended Posts

I have hot water/boiler heat in my home. Of course this means that there is no duct work currently in my house. My question is if anyone can tell me how a central air conditioning system would be installed, and how much I might expect to pay for it.

I have heard that there is a way to run that flexable duct work through the attic, which would obviously be cheaper than putting metal ducts in my basement. Is this true?

Thanks for any help.

There are many options I wouldnt say that it would be cheaper in the attic because of labor;the hassle of cutting holes in the ceiling, crawling around in the attic, and getting from the air handler to the attic. It would be a good idea for you to maybe a good idea to look into a mini split system aka ductless ac.

You do have a couple of options. One is called a high velocity system where they use flexible pipe and approx 2 inch ducts to accomplish the ducting. The second is a split system as mentioned above. These aren't cheap either. Talk to your local contractor or cruise the web to compare prices. Your final choice will probably depend on the size of your home. If you have a small home then the split system may be the ticket. If it is larger then the high velocity will probably be less expensive.

I have a split level house and also have boiler heat.

We checked into putting in a mini split air conditioning unit last year. I can't remember the exact number but the bid was right around $4000 to do it.

I figure I can put in one or two window units (we already have a wall unit for the upstairs) and call it good for a LOT less.
