Long Range Shooting>

Recommended Posts

Years ago, I read an article about disabled hunters out west, shooting bedded Mule deer from across the valley.

I don't know if I read it wrong, or what, (Once in awhile, in my exuberance, I have been know to miss a key word!) but I seem to recall that these guys would sometimes make killing shots at over 2000 yards...does that sound feasible?

I think it was in Outdoor Life and the pics showed rifles with railroad tie stocks and bull barrels that looked like 4 inch pipe! All the paraphnalia, elaborate rests, spotting scopes, and rifle scopes that looked like they weighed more then I do!

I have heard of Marine Corp snipers reaching out and touching someone at 1300 yards, with modified .308's, but since that article, nothing beyond that...anyone with any input out there?

What the heck kind of bullet would they be using? I don't think it was the 50 caliber, this was a long time ago...I've only recently heard of a single shot 50, that they are now trying to outlaw.

you should chekc out the field and stream august issue. it has a bunch of different tests run on different guns to see how each person/gun shot at diferent intervals

Well I don't know about shooting at a deer bedded down at 2,000 yards being the best thing to do but that's a different debate. But regularily (on calm days) me and my buddies hit prairie dogs at 600 yards with a 220 swift. The farthest confirmed was close to 700 with us taking pot shots out to 850 yards (leica 1200 rangefinder) and coming close enough to scare them. I consider myself average at shooting a rifle. So I could see if someone had a customized bench rifle that it would be possible.

I've been checking this post everyday to see if someone would reply...I've been waiting for you!

600 and 800 yard shots at a Prairie Dog with a little .22 type speedster, is just as tough a feat, I would think? Smaller target, smaller bullet, more that can go wrong from the wind, gravity, etc.

I would suppose that the bullets that the shooters in the long ago article were using, were not traveling to slow either!
What kind of muzzel and down range volocity would say a souped up .270 or .300 be kicking out?

I'm not a reloader, nor do I know alot about ballistics, I'm just somewhat facinated by that long range shooting and hitting, fast bullets in all the calibers.

220...218...22-250...223...5mm...25-06...17
and now I see they have a hummer out there in the form of a .204 that generates over 4200 fps at the muzzel!

I would still like to know if the 2000 yard stuff happens, or ever did?

As a MCSF Sniper would say - no way!
It might be a 50 cal. that can reach that effectively. I don't have the answer to your article - search google etc.
My opinion, not a chance.
Across a valley 300-500 meters yeah..? But, not 2000.

Duluth Guy...I seen your post to Hof 13 and it seems as if you know your stuff and where to find out if you don't!

I guess that other then satisifing a curiosity, it makes little difference, because I certainly am not going to shoot at anything at that distance!

My rimfire .22 Mag is all the gun I need, for the shooting that I do. Initially, I bought it for predator hunting...but then my pard took a powder, the biz took off and my time was limited, so I had to make some choices. At any rate, thanks for taking the time to answer.

Well, I can tell you that I now shoot competitively(sp) as a hobby. If you start up at a gun range shooting turkeys, pigs, rams etc. you will hang out with people that reload and then you might start in then, you will start another learning curve...

DuluthGuy...thanks for the offer, but I have enough learning curves going on already, this computer being one of them.

I'am also going to try to teach myself to speak rudimentary Spanish...some of my employees are of Spanish decent and I want to know when they are talking about me! (Just kidding).

There are also a couple of other irons in the fire, so I guess anything other then the curiousity, is going to have to wait.

Duluth Guy,

Where do you shoot?? I shot quite a bit in the past, but haven't recently. I used to belong to the gun club in Two Harbors, and they can shoot up to 500 yds. Are there any ranges like this in Duluth??? Curious now.... Thanks for any info.

B-Swede,
I shot out of Montana and then a couple comp's in Canada. I haven't shot in Duluth or joined a club yet. I know there is a couple clubs here that do. One is private but, I think i might have a in. I will post it if I look at them.

So, you used to be a Ram tipper?

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
