Was wondering if anyone reloads thier own steelshot shells. If so have they tried loading faststeel (over 1800 fps a second). Does it pattern worth a hoot? Plan on trying it myself, got the loader set up and going to test it myself. Would be nice to compare notes, recipes, etc.

I am not a reloader so I may be wrong. What I have heard that economically, it is not worth reloading steel shotgun shells. Is about the same price as buying them. Others may be more informed than I however!

PSE,
I have shot reloaded "speedsteel" and loved it! It hits like lead and at amazing ranges too.
The guy you want to talk to about it runs a shop called Owl Sports in Glenwood. His phone number is 320-634-5929. He has shot this for years and has worked up many recipes and has even had many loads tested by balistics people.
Good Luck

Ya I know Leroy O. quit well (from owl sports) He knows a bunch about reloading but I was looking for other input. I've heard from other sources good and bad was just trying to get somemore. Guess it don't matter I'm going to figure it out myself anyway. Was just wanting to know anyone elses opinion and I ain't afraid to test out some wildcats either.

Do you know of someplace I don't where I could pick up 3 1/2 inch 12ga for under ten bucks a box that have 1 1/2 oz shot w/1550fps.

No, I sure don't. That would be a very good price in my opinion, especially since I shoot a few cases a year. If you can reload them for that price, please let us know. I might get into it as well!

Are you stating that you are already loading 3 1/2 steel loads for less than 10 bucks a box? Could you please post your recipe? I would be very interested...as I am sure others will!

I'll give you some figures, but they do not include the reloading press, manuals or other equipment neccessary for reloading. Costs will vary depending on where items are bought and quantities bought. Figures here are an average I've paid higher and lower.

This would be for 3 1/2" 12ga. 1 1/2oz.
wad $ .136
shell $ .01
primer $ .025
shot $ .15
powder $ .061
This should come out to be about 38.1 cents a shot or $9.52 a box if my math is right. I'm not real inclined to give out a recipe to an inexperienced reloader. Instead would say to get a reloading manual and read it a couple times. Like I said it only includes basic ingrediants does not figure in time or equipment. Recipes are usually free in pamphlets the powder companies put out. If still interested thereis a wealth of info out there for nothin sometimes.

I made a mistake on my figures the wads cost at full price shouldn't be more than six and a half cents which would reduce the cost of a box by $1.75

i have been thinking about reloading my own shells, but I'm not sure if the price savings would be enough to justify it. I shoot about 5 cases a year of the cheap lead and also have a friend that shoots about the same. During waterfowl I go through 2-3 cases and the friend shoots about that, also. Does anyone have any idea if it would be worth my time and effort? For waterfowl I would like to get about 1600 fps with 1 1/8 ounce shot. Is that possible to easily achieve? Thanks for the help in advance.

I don't reload for cheaper shells. The reason I reload is because I enjoy doing it, and I can make loads that cannot be bought. Yes it does save money but not enough to do it for that reason alone. I just edited my previous post as I messed up on my math.
