257 WBY MAG?

Recommended Posts

some info on this caliber so if you can do so I'd 'preciate it muchly. My dad just bought a gun in a Weatherby Mark V 257 WBY Mag of course. He plans to buy 120 gr barnes x bullets. He will use it for deer mainly but where he is at the moose are in the same woods. He currently uses a 270 win for moose and deer and over the years he has taken several dozen moose with the 270. He almost traded it off for another 270 but after talking to a friend who has one he decided to keep it. It's a nice looking gun with a gray laminated stock and just got to put a good scope on it. He hunts mainly around the lake of the woods area so some long shots are always there. He doesnt reload so he will be shooting factory rounds through it but he will save his brass cuz now we know a guy that wants the brass. I'm glad he decided to keep it. Might even try it on a moose if he has to. Thanks in advance! Brian

Now we are talking! Everything about this round is prefect (I am a bit biased towards Weatherby though). It is fast, the trajectory is fantastic, and it provides pretty good hydrostatic shock upon hitting its target (loads will vary however). It is a fantastic deer round. I would use caution when moose hunting however. It could be used for close and precise shots but if you will be shooting a greater distances, I would go .300 or better. That of course is just my opinion and it can (and probably will) be disputed. Factory loads for weatherby guns are not just "factory loads", they are hot and accurate. I believe they are made by Norma if I am not mistaking. You should for sure keep the brass, you will be able to off-set the cost of the ammo a little by selling the brass. Anyway, good luck with you fire stick, it is a fantastic gun and round!

Please tell me he is hunting the Canadian side of LOW! It's not legal to take a moose on the U.S. side of LOW this year, and the last couple of seasons, if memory serves correctly. Moose in Mn. is only legal in the N.E. side of the state.

That said, the 257 W.M. is about as good as it gets.

Your memory is correct IDog! The Western side of the state has been closed for several years and it does not look like it will open anytime soon. They were once thick in the NW portion of the state. Sightings are few these days! To bad, there were some bruisers out there...I guess there still are, just not as many!
