Lakers on Superior?

Recommended Posts

A couple buddies and I are hooked on Lake of the Woods lakers, but we don't have the time to head up there for a while (hopefully another trip this year, but we'll see). So we'd like to try them on Superior. I remember seeing good reports from there in years past. We want to do a day trip or two from the Twin Cities.

Anyone have suggestions on where to go out of? What to use? How to target them? Better yet, anyone want to join us for a day trip? We're geared up and ready to go!

Thanks for any help.

i fish cheguamagon bay quite a bit and it has good ice. i know guys target 'em out by the apostle islands using airplane jigs and something called a 'beetle' tipped with strips of herring. i would look on jim hudson's web site for some good info.

Chequamegon is the ONLY place in this end of the lake where you can go for lakers, plenty of ice in the islands now. There is no ice in Duluth now, other than about 100yds out from shore. None of the ice here gets deep enough to consistently target lakers. Some ice comes and goes, but you don't want to be on the wrong side of a crack when the ice breaks away. If you do decide to go out of duluth, drag a boat.

BTW, LOTW is about 2 hours from Duluth, right? Chequamegon is 90 minutes from Superior, i don't know how that could be too far, but LOTW is in reach.

Well according googlemaps, Baudette is 4:45 from Duluth. Then you've got to go quite a ways north from there to get to the lakers up in Whitefish Bay. Really, you'd go to Sioux Narrows which is 5 hours from Duluth.

Sounds like Chequamegon is the place to go. Any decent places to stay...decent, like inexpensive, around there?

i don't know the name of the places, but i know there are a few motles in the area of washburn. i would use your search engine and type in for motels in washburn. i stay at the cabin, sorry i can't be more help.

Check with Craig at Outdoor Allure. Right next to the bait shop he's got a place he rents out, looks perfect. You can check it out on the HSOforum. I wanna say it would only be like 30 bucks each for 4 guys for a night. Even though i'm coming from Superior, we've been thinking about it, nice to drive there instead of back home.

Other than that, Washburn would be your best bet. Ashland is getting far, Bayfield would cost some coin, and i don't think there's anything in Red Cliff.

LOTW is a 7 hour drive from the cities (door to door), then (almost) another hour on the sleds. Not an ideal day trip. With that much time in driving, we're not going to stay just one night, therefore looking to fish something closer.

I agree with Deathroe, Cheq. Bay is the place to go. I've spent a few nights at the lodge at outdoor allure. You can't beat the price and location. Craig and Joe are more then willing to help you out. If you need a guide, check out Jim Hudson. He's a good guy that knows how to put you on fish.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
