I drew a May 15-19 hunt this year, and some things that I have been reading say leave the decoy at home, and call very very little? What else am I in for a surprise for on my hunt?

A little info,I hunt mostly wooded private land, and very low hunter pressure if any....

If you can't get close to the birds on roost,I wouldn't be afraid to start around 8-9 am. Thats when most of the hens should be on or heading back to their nests. The Toms will be out on the prowl for the last of unbread hens. Decoys may work with really low pressure, its trial and error as far as that goes. I would definitely do some scouting and try to pattern their movements.

Some say that later in the season, hens will try to avoid toms. They have been harassed all season. With toms still following them around looking for love, they would more readily come to just hen decoys for companionship. Trying to ditch these towed gobblers to go to nest, they might use your decoy to "pawn" them off. By this time, the pecking order is well established and a gobbler knows his place. I've had gobblers shy away from my jake. I'm assume they have been whooped before. I've also heard a low staked lone hen can work well at that time of year. A receptive hen in view might bring them running.

Bass, you are also apt to run into groups of jakes & matures toms only. I have several times. I've emulated a jake yelp for many minutes before I've broke a bird from the group. It works. 3-5 coarse slower yelps. Maybe they'll break to come check out one of their pals.

Most of all, don't quit or give up. If you know a travel way you might catch them moving thoughout midday 10-3. Remember any gobble is close, sound won't travel well through the foliage. Use that cover to your advantage. If you get a response put yourself in a position so he has to look for you - over a hill or around a corner. If he can see across a field he may not cross it but when he comes over the rise in range, shoot!
