Scott M
DORRANCE, Kan. (AP) _ A retired Hays doctor is giving nearly 1,700 acres of Kansas land to a wildlife group.Dr. Wallace Weber decided to transfer the land in Russell County to Pheasants Forever, as long as the group leaves it intact and doesn't sell it. Pheasants Forever says it's the most land it has ever received in a single gift. The property -- known as Dubuque Land and Cattle -- includes Weber's birthplace and childhood home, as well as land he has acquired over the years. The 65-year-old Weber said universities he contacted told him it wasn't enough land to be self-sustaining.The first half-section of ground -- 320 acres -- was transferred in December.Weber founded Heartland Dermatology Center in Hays, from which he retired in 2005. He spent 31 years in the U.S. Army, retiring as a colonel.**********************************************Quite a selfless gift. The land will be open to public hunting when Dr. Weber is deceased. Jim Bob
We hunted Kansas this past weekend and 2 WIHA areas we hit each had 75-100 birds get up. It was incredible! We've hit 1 of these areas every trip this season (8 trips), sometimes twice during the same trip and only once have we not seen birds. They have an awesome program!Season ends this Saturday and hoping to make it out one more time!
