Macgyver55
Put on about 475 miles this weekend. We rode from Glen (north of Malmo), to Ely and back. On the way up we went through McGregor, Wright, Brookston and up through Cotton, Eveleth, Virginia then on to Tower and finally Ely. The only description I can give was WOW. The first 90 miles we never saw another sled, not one. Most every trail we were the first ones on freshly groomed trail literally like pool table smooth. We made great time as far as Eveleth where the actual trail ended and we had to ditch ride for about 5 miles where we picked up the trail again. After that we hit the Laurentian trail after leaving Virginia and that was great as usual. The only thing we rode up that was even moderately bumpy was the Taconite Spur trail. Sunday morning we left and the Taconite trail out of Ely was "used", but very tolerable with the fresh snow that was falling as we left. We had breakfast in Tower then set out for the run home. We were giddy when we got on the Taconite eastbound and found it to be freshly gromed Saturday night and it was smoother than any highway in the state. We rode that to McCarthy beach State park where we broke off and headed through Side Lake area down to Nashwauk, Floodwood, Wright and back through McGregor to Glen. Sunday morning we had gone 130 miles before seeing another sled. Aside from one close call with a deer, and an even closer call with a charging dog, the trip was flawless. The Renegade turned over 8500 miles, I think I'm gonna treat it to its first new set of slides!
