Chequamegon Bay, great lakes prespawn walleye?

Recommended Posts

I live on Madeline Island half of the year, I am heading back up Mid April, earlier than usual. Going to have to miss out on some of the best spring walleye fishing on the mississippi. Looking for info regarding early spring walleye fishing in the area(open water). I assume things can get going pretty well up on the St. Louis if legal, need to check the regs.

When is iceout generally on chequamegon bay, is the walleye season continuous? Any other rivers in area that allow legal walleye fishing this time of year?
Would love to get after some great lakes, pre-spawn eyes, must be some big girls out there! I have a boat and will travel if needed, although close would be nice.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks to any replies.
Headed up to the rainy in a couple of days, don't want that to be the end of my spring fishing season, Any tips greatly appreciated.

fishingchef,
St Louis river doesnt open until May 15th this year, limit is 2 over 15".
The Wisconsin side of lake superior is open year-round for eye's. The rivers are subject to general walleye fishing rules and dont open til May 1st. You may want to check out the options on the east side of WI along the lake michigan side for early options.
I know the Fox river in green bay is already heating up for big fish and i think that the menominie river has an early season(?)

another great early walleye spot is the mouth of the Montreal river just west of the U.P. border we have caught big eyes there in early may i believe its been awhile since i have fished there but it was really hot at times and beutiful. we would use 1oz bottom bouncers with spinners and crawlers and let them out in the current and then really slow retreive i mean real slow fishing the miss you p robably have some tactics that would really work

the ice should be out by the end of april then if the water is not to muddy you will have to find the schools of smelt if you find the smelt you will find the eyes the smelt will run right after ice out so troll around the river mouths were you know there are good smelt runs i like around washburn marina and bono creek or around the power plant in ashland is always a awsome spot if you can stand the crowds it gets fished hard but there are some real monsters that come in there i would use smelt imitation rapalas or bombers.

I was told by a customer in Bayfield that the bay is wide open off of bayfield and Washburn but the landings might still have ice in them so it won't be too long now and I can get out and get some browns!!!
