BrianLucky13
1988 chevy 4x4. Ok lets see if any of this makes sense!!!When I am driving in 2wd or 4wd and I step on the brake to hard or if I really stump on it the tansfer case will all of a sudden go into neutral. By neutral I dont mean the shifter on the floor. Then in order to get it back into regular 2wd or 4wd I have to move the floor shifter around like crazy. But most the time it will just get stuck into 4 Low???? As the time goes on it keeps getting worst and worst. All the linkage and everything like that is fine. Im thinking something inside the transfer case is messed up. By the way, this all happened when I was really pushing my truck hard in 4WD.ANY IDEAS????THANKS GUYS
Macgyver55
It seems to me I've run into a similar problem like this before. If I remember correctly there was a snap ring that broke on one of the transfer case gears that allowed the gear to slide on the shaft away from the other gear it meshed with. After I found it, it was a fairly inexpensive repair. If this is your problem it involves removing the rear drive shaft and the rear tail housing on the transfer case. Not sure if this is the problem with yours or not but it is one possibility.
efgh
My old truck did the same thing, it was a worn out shift rail.

I remember something about that also but I could have sworn they made a heck of a racket when moving when they where broke. Still wouldn't hurt to pull that end housing off to see!! givetoget
yes airjer you are corect,it will and does make a heck of a nois sometimes. Yes there is retainer ring in the tail of your transfer case that holds the planetary gear in place. What happens is just what you said BrianLucky13 when pushing the truck hard thats when they breake, and the gear can move around. it is a inexpensive repair. I do know this because it happend to me twice. There is an updated reainer clip for it now that the dealers say they will not break. The cheaper clips were only a few $s and the updated one was like 30$s if i remember right
