tip up rigging

what are my options for rigging a tip up? Must I use a live minnow?

I spool it with nylon coated tip-up line first, then put a hook normally 1/0 or smaller (normally smaller). With a sinker on the line about 8 inches above the hook. With a shiner, sucker or fat head for walleye. Sometimes i put a 2'-3' mono leader with a jig, with or without the weight depending on situation. I think live bait is your best bet.

How do you guys prevent your tipup holes from freezing up

I have the plank style tip ups (I like those better than the round ones), so they dont insulate the hole at all, but I just go out there like every two hours or so and remove all the ice with a skimmer. Or if i get a bite while there is ice I just pull the tip up out while letting out line so they dont feel it of course, and they just take the ice out while im waiting to take the fish.

you don't have to use live bait if you get these "windlass" tip ups you can use dead bait cuz the wind jigs it for you.... haven't really tried them out but people i've talked to don't fish with any other kind

Do you guys put leaders on when fishing for Pike? Won't they cut through mono?

If the hook makes it past the teeth yes they can cut the Mono.

o ya srry ya i have a leader attached to the mono then the hook attached to the leader

I just use black line for my pike. don't like how weak mono is.
