"Mysteries of the Great Lakes"

Went to the science museum today and saw "Mysteries of the Great Lakes." Awesome film about, among a couple things, the recovery of the Great Lakes Lake Sturgeon. Ron Bruch from the Wisconsin DNR narrated a bunch of the movie and talked about helping the fish recover, establishing spawning runs in Lake Michigan, and a little on the biology of Lake Sturgeon. It's actually a very well-done and stirring movie, and for those that go to the Sturgeon Excursion, it helps paint the picture of what these fish went through to be recovered after being on the brink of extinction. Bruch spoke about the relationship he has with a 120 year old, 200 pound female that returns to the same river infrequently, and how each year that he nets her, measures her, and takes a few eggs for hatchery production, he wonders if it will be the last time he sees her, or if she will outlive him. It really was a well done documentary with strong visuals and a powerful message. There is a little bit of fluff to get through and maybe it ends too positively (the narrator talks about ballast regulation finally tightening to stop invasive species which is still decades behind), but I thought it was a pretty cool film.

A few displays on the top floor of the museum on Lake Sturgeon were also very informative.

I thought the film was so good that I would buy a copy, but I was told that because the appeal is only to Great Lakes states and is only being shown in Great Lakes states, it will not be formatted to DVDs and sold, like other IMAX films are.

It's showing for a few more weeks in St. Paul. I would recommend giving it a try if you aren't wetting a line some weekend. Shot in the dark, but did anyone else see this film?

I will bring the girlfriend to this. I know she will want to trek to the cities and see something like this with me. I have always had a love for Sturgeon since I was a little kid (never even caught one to this day!).

Oh and yopaulpinkfloyd, I like your avatar. I am listening to The Wall as I type.

Got a chance to talk with Mr. Bruch. He says the movie will be in DVD format, available online, later this month. He also said they found an even larger female, and inserted a PIT tag into her. Huge fish, over 80" and 2 feet tall.
