rat help

I'm pretty new to trapping and this year am attempting trapping rats in their houses. I've got a few but it seems that I'm getting alot of traps tripped with just swamp and house clutter left in the traps and no rats. Any tips out there? What am I doing wrong? I'm placing the traps at the edge of the entrance hole with the dog facing away.

I normally set my trap in a depression on the shelf. or try placeing the dog to the side so they walk between the jaws.

I had set it back to the den giving them time to unload anything they may bring into hut.
