Treble hooks on tip ups

A treble hook has to be part of a "lure". How far from the spinner or how close it would have to be may be something left to intrepretation. I haven't really seen a definition of a lure in the regs so it may be a bit of a slippery slope.

I bought these treble hooks a number of years ago. I think they are from Mad Dog Lures (not 100% sure on that one, it has been a while). They have a little red bead intergrated into the hook with some white dots painted on them. I think this is an attempt to make a "lure" with most of it being the treble hook.

I think this could also be left up to interpretation whether it is a "lure" or not. I haven't had any experience with being checked by a C.O. while using it nor have I asked anyone who may have a better handle on what constitutes a "lure."

I always take a plain treble hook, attach a small swivel with a couple of beads or small spinner attached to it. There is your artificial lure and within regulations.

Anglers may use only one hook. An artificial lure is considered one

hook. A treble hook, when not part of an artificial lure, is considered

three hooks and is not legal.

Thanks for your help. I know last year it was you could have a spinner 6" away from the hook but they changed that to it has to be attached. Guess I'll buy some split rings and aach it to the hook. Hopefully that will be good enough.

I emailed the DNR on this question last year, here is the question and the response.

Question:I will be going to Upper Red Lake in February of 2008. My question is in regards to using a treble hook on tip-ups. What makes the treble hook a lure? Does a single bead make it a lure?

Answer:Hello,The least enforcement will accept is a spinner blade within three inches of the treble hook.

I don't fish Minnesota often. But when i have and used tip ups I used just plain trbles and a stinger. You mean to tell me this was illegal, that each plain treble is considerd three hooks, and a stinger would be additional hooks.
