Wondering how the fishing has been in Lake Michigan? We have been fishing out of Bailey's Harbor for the past 20 years and will be trying Algoma this year for the first time, so if there is anything else about Algoma (boat launch, where to get a license, is it very crowded) please let us know. Thanks in advance and will have a report next week.

I fish out of Kewaunee, a little south of Algoma. I sometimes run north and fish waters off Algoma. Kewaunee does have a gas station/bait and tackle shop. I'm sure Algoma has places also. If your gonna be out for the best bite (at first light, 4 am) plan ahead to have your license already. Kewaunee has a nice launch, lots of parking, rest rooms, and fish cleaning station as well. There is a fee, I think it's $3, I am always driveing and backing in the boat so I never paid much attention to it. I know this isn't Algoma, but with the close proximity I hope this may help you somewhat. can it be luck?

This year will be my first time out of algoma. Have went out of kewaunee for some 18 years. The lack of hospitality and hostility towards tourists has driven us away. I did tour the algoma marina last year, and was very nice people there. There is a cleaning station at the launch. As of then, there was not a gas pump at the lake, people were filling with cans. No idea how charters did it other than a tank on their trucks? Algoma is also larger and should provide some entertainment during shore time.

For fishing, it has been very hot. Most fish are adult size already, hitting on flasher/fly combos, with a few starting to hit on spoons. The bo action has been very very far out, but has been productive also. The thermocline has not rolled over yet from what i have heard, although will soon which will slow the fishing for a few weeks. Still a month before i go over, but getting anxious with the great reports. Good luck!

Max, anything specific as to hostilitys? Other than gas or launch and an ocasional dinner at the bar/resaraunt by the marina(excellent by the way) there definitly isn't a whole lot to Kewaunee. Not spending time there other than to fish I'm curious why you'd think such a thing. I did stay at the hotel just on the north of town, they were blacktopping the parking that weekend. I woke the owners up late and they were more than hospitable, even came out to help in the backing of my boat and always expressing that they were sorry of the inconvienience with the parking. Never fished out of Algoma other than fall run river fish. Guys did good a couple days ago with the east to northeast winds. It's been slow to warm this year and will only get better. Just curious. can it be luck.

Never Enough....,

Can It Be Luck is most likely refering to the Coho Motel when he mentioned staying at the motel just North of Kewaunee. The owners, Jeff and Vicky, are the most hospitipal lodge owners that I have ever stayed with anywhere. As far as the merchants in Kewaunee are concerned,I have never felt any hostility, period. Now, if we are talking about slow service in every restaraunt East of Chippewa Falls and getting worst as you go farther East, that I agree with. I believe that the pace of life out in "Dairy Country" Wiscosin is just plain slow and frustates city people that have a life to live. About fishing in Algoma versus Kewaunee. I have fished both and prefer Kewaunee. I like to go out in to the deeper ( 300' to 500' ) water after 7:00 am or so as the bite for Kings fades and the bite for Bows heats up. In Algoma you need to go out around 16 miles for 500' whereas you can be in 500' only 10 miles out in Kewaunee. Kewaunee has two places to get licenses that are both open when you arrive the evening before. ( 11:00 or so) The Inner Harbor Marina charges a very fair price for transient/daily dockage, and has two cleaning stations that are for the use of dockage customers. My advice, fish and sleep in Kewaunee, eat in at any of the places on Hwy 29 between the Coho and Algoma. I will be out the weekend of August 8 thru 10 on the water the 8th and 9th. If you are there hail me on channel 69 or 72. My handle is " Eastwind". We can trade reports.

i have stayed at the coho, which is very good, nice rooms, and greg and vicki are great people. The resturaunt, larry and monas is great as well, not a single complaint ever.

I have not heard complaints about algoma, so will try that this year. People i know catch a lot of fish up there and the reports are good. I only need to catch one, the rest are just extra. I enjoy much more watching others in the boat catch them. In the old days, we would go there to get meat. Today, i go there to relax and enjoy the whole trip, and spend more time on shore. Anyone can go wherever they like, and may or may not have problems, just sharing what i know, and what i have been told by other. Good luck!

Eastwind, The hotel is the Coho. Thanks for the info about water depths, I never knew. I thought of trying Algoma, but with this new info. I think I'll stick to Kewaunee. Jeff and Vicki(?) were almost to nice, something like you'd see on TV, very refreshing to see and feel this kind of hospitality. I'll keep my ears open for you if I'm out then, the season's just starting to heat up!! can it be luck?

I would have posted my report sooner if I had anything to report from last weekend. Arrived Friday to very windy conditions which kept us and most others off the lake. Storms started early Saturday morning and then the winds picked up again. The harbor was full of boats and not many were out. The forecast for the remainder of the weekend was not favorable so we went home. We'll be back next year to give Algoma a try and hope for better weather conditions. Again, thanks to those who shared their info.

Check out the HSOforum at algoma.org
They have fishing reports under the charter fishing topic.
I have fished there for the past eight years and the people are very friendly and know that they are making money off the good fishing. There is a good marina with a fish cleaning station. Pier 42 has licenses, lodging and food. I was out there in mid-June and the water was down but they were dredging the marina.
I will be out there this weekend fishing again and it sounds like the fishing is very good. Lots on 3 and 4 year olds.
Stop into Penguin City Pizza, my inlaws own it and have good pizza and homemade pies.
Good luck.
Rob
