First Ice Spearing

What kind of lakes or rivers do you key on for first ice spearing? I'm not looking for specific lakes, just types or certain water. I personally like a smaller shallower lake with a river or stream inlet or or outlet.

a lake with safe ice. seriously, i like a lake thats shallow, has what i call pickeral weeds and lots of panfish.

Glenn is right, right away at the beginning of the year, its more important to have safe ice, then anything else. within a month, we will be able to go anywhere.

stay safe I look for weed lines and sand bars first ice but be carefull around the weed lines cause the weeds omit o2 and can cause thin ice always check it as you go. cant stress enough the saftey factor.
