Never in a vehicle, only on foot. Last year I made the mistake of going one last time last spring. I made it on the ice just fine... Getting back off was not so fine. Went threw 3 times before I found an area to get back to shore. OOPS!!!!!.. sometimes even stupid people learn!

Just like ex-guy, couple few years back me and my brother were looking for a spot to get out on Minnetonka and couldn't find anywhere that the ice hadn't melted already too far from shore. Then it happened, my brother calls me and says hey found a spot on North Arm we can get onto the ice. There were other on the ice, so no big deal. We lower ourselves down the steep wood poles they have there, because the boat landing is water (hmmm - should of been our first clue). Anyway, got out a couple hundred yards and fished, caught a bunch of nice gills, it was a beautiful day, high in the mid 60s <-ouch, oh yea did I mention it was late March I think, don't think it was April but who knows. Anyway again, about an hour or two before we left from a successful trip I looked into shore and watched a guy get out about 2 feet and went right through the ice - he pulled hisself out and got in his truck and left. Now we decide to leave and got within 5 feet of where he went in and I stated hey Josh look that is where that guy went in - BOOM!! down I go catch myself on my elbows - my brother without hesitation, comes right over and pulls me out - glad he didn't go in to! Now we are stuck with the delima of getting off, the ice has melted off the shore. My brother said I just walked right by the landing and open water without hesitation and walked right through the 1 foot water by shore and got on dry land. Why I decided to walk by that landing and chance going through again, I don't know - must of been the cold water got to my brain and freeze dried it, but we made it safely off and that is what is important. Two fools wanting one last day of fishing!

Buy a new pro-v and you will never go thru rotten late march ice again!
Ever since I spent 20+ grand on my boat I can't wait to get to open water and that means going to the Mississippi reever in march!
Had to pull a friend out of rotten ice once and will never do that again. The next day some one drowned in that same lake!
So I avoid rotten ice and sit in a cushy boat seat and catch walleyes and saugers!
Good Luck!

Heading out with my buddy and his girlfriend on a metro lake years back. He is driving her car, DALE!! we scream you cant drive there (pressure ridge) he ignores us because it is too far to drive around the ridge he feels. So... car goes in, adrenaline takes over and we swim to good ice. About 5 years later I am at a party in the summer, I meet up with this girls dad and introduce myself. His response? You're the guy who put my daughters car in the lake! Turns out my buddy blamed me for it. We worked it out though, I made him take me out for beers.

A ZEN MASTER
