Pickin' Crawlers Tonight?

LMITOUT

Recommended Posts

First time out this year looking for crawlers for next weekend but only saw a couple that were barely out of their holes. Is it too cold? 40° right now. Usually with this much rain my yard is "crawling" with them and they're laying up on the grass loving life. Not so much tonight. Anybody else? I might try it a little later to see if anything changes.

I've heard the same thing about the street walkers. An old fellow once told me that he won't use them. They pick up the oils and salt from the street. Can't argue with the wisdom of the old guys!

Anyway, I don't seem to ever see any on my street or driveway like others do.

I just picked about 2 dozen but i walked about 3-4 blocks to do it. the Crawlers aren't really out, but you could pick a million earthworms if you wanted to. you cant take a step right now without crushing about 5.

I wonder if its the cold, but the crawlers i picked up have not really moved in the dirt i put them in. im going to run across the road and get some worm bedding tomorrow.

also about the blacktop, i'm not really concerned if they pick up the salt and the oils. they absorb what they crawl over so if you put them in some good dirt or worm bedding that stuff shouldn't be in their system forever.

Yea when I pick them I dont pick them off the road either because of that old timers reason I think they pick up acids and stuff that turn off the fish who knows though!

There's a lot more earthworms out but the crawlers are out also in St. Cloud. Just picked a few dozen quick. I pick mine off the street, its much easier and havn't had any problems catching fish with them. May help it's a smaller culdesac road.

The earthworms were out all over the driveway and road by my place. I went out at about 9:45 and the crawlers were a little sparse but once i got to my "structure" spots i came out with about 4 dozen. Quantity wasnt there but there sure was quality... couple of them i mistaked for gardener snakes!!

Nightcrawlers were out in force last night after yesterdays rain. Not able to get any yesterday but tonight is different story. Lite showers now add some warm temps. and my bait boxes should have some new members.

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
