Reel size and gear ratio

Recommended Posts

I asked below about the record 50; I want to see if i have this right. A bigger reel with a lower gear ratio could actually retrieve line faster tan a smaller reel with a higher gear ratio, right? I have a Calcutta 400 (5.3 to 1) and i wanted a faster reel; the smaller record 50 is 6.3 to 1, but with the smaller spool, am I gaining anything? Just trying to figure this out while I can still exchange it, but the larger record is back to 5.3 to 1, so I'd gain nothing there. Suggestions for another higher speed reel?

without doing a bunch of math. (i'd probly mess that up any how) the easiest way is go to their websites and look how much line is retrieved per crank. easy cheesey

Or measure it yourself... make sure your spool is full...

Actually... I havent really gotten a handle on how to figure out the measurement for specific gear ratio...

All I know is that... higher the gear ratio, more line is reeled in per turn... lower the gear ratio, less line is reeled in per turn...

Take this for example...

Abu Garcia 7000iC3- 4.1:1 gear ratio... 28 inches of line per turn... (I measured it myself)

Shimano Trinidad TN16N- 6.3:1 gear ratio... 43 inches of line per turn... (Measurement from Shimano HSOforum)

I guess that the spool size could factor in the length of line per turn too... all I know is that nobody would leave their spool not full...

thanks guys. didn't want to spool it up if i might just be returning it. I checked the BPS site...turns out the record retrieves 30" per turn, highest of any they list. Bingo:) Looks like I'll be keeping it.

Here is how the ratio works. When you read 5.3:1, what that means is the number of revolutions the spool will make as it compares to one turn of the handle

Now...if you have a larger center portion of the spool, the line will come on quicker since in one revolution the larger center portion will bring in more line.

The normal Garcia reels are 5.3:1 in the C3 series, TCS series, etc. The C4 series has (I believe) a 6.1:1 ratio.

I have a 6500C4 that I use for Jerkbaits and love it. I bought it just for that reason...to pick up line quicker between twitches/jerk-baits of the rod...
