Big Stone Lake

Recommended Posts

Hey i was wondering if anyone had ever fished big stone lake(MN-SD border) before. I will be making a trip out there in the middle of april as the walleye season opens early on the border waters. I wanted to get a feel of what the fishing would be like, what the lake was like, what to expect, etc. I do know that it has stocked walleyes and is a very shallow lake that does not get very deep. Any help would be greatly apriciated. Thanks

I have fished the lake with a group early May for the last 10 years and it has gotten a little tougher every year. Find a wind blown shore line and you can work that with a jig or casting. Early morning and evening have been the best times for us. Our luck in the middle of the day has not been the best. Most of the time a slow troll in the deepest part(12 to 15ft)has picked up a fish or two. The best luck we have had in the past few years has been supper time and later with a bobber or a jig going very shallow where the wind pounds into the shore line. The eyes come very shallow and you can have some great luck. It is a huge lake so find a spot alone and keep moving and if you are at a resort try the docks, they work too.

Good luck.

as stated casting jigs or small raps in the shallows is good, Big Stone is well known for its nightbite so dont hesitate staying into the evening.. Alot of guys like the northern part of the lake in the spring, but if your going to take the boat ride up there be prepared for weather (wind)... Seems to always be wind factors to take into consideration on Bigstone, its not very wide but she can swell up on you in a hurry...

if youre still looking at this post, its funny you should ask, cuz you should check out the dnrs "conservation" magazine. it has an article in there this month about 3 guys tripping out to big stone park for early season walleye fishing. it seems like river fishing conditions without the current. 26 miles long and 1 mile wide with a mean depth of 11 feet and pretty stained water.
