PT73
Replacing the treads and risers on the staircase going to the basement, tired of the creeking/squeeking. Of course, they are not square with the walls, is there any rentable tool that can help me get these angles correct?. Thanks
sparcebag
There is a ajustable square, looks like a 6-8" handle with a wingnut and a blade thats enclosed, ask at the local box store.I just use a framing square, measure depth of tread put square against riser and at gap weather in back or front measure difference and transfer to tread
Surface Tension
Not sure what you mean. Are you leaving the old stringers in?"Not square to the wall"Do you mean where the tread and wall meet are not square? If so use a sliding bevel. Put a straight edge across the stringers for your sliding bevel. Take the angle off the wall and cut that side of the tread. Measure the width of the thread. Take the angle of the other side of the wall. Transfer that on your width. Got an irregular edge? use a compass and scribe the profile of the wall onto roofing felt. The squeaks could be coming from the stringers. If they aren't anchored well you'll have squeaks.
ELUSIVE FISH
Make sure you glue or use some kind of construction adhesive on the stair treads & rizers. That will help stop the squeeking. Also use screws not nails when fastening the treads etc. Also there are books, internet on HOW TO cut, fasten the stair stringers.GOOD LUCK
