JacobMHD
I have an electric water heater that recently decided it will only heat water after I press the reset button. It is only 5 or 6 years old. What can I do to determine the problem?
marine_man
I would guess that the element that is located near the reset button needs to be replaced. I'd do a continuity check on it (after you shut off the power and disconnect the wires) to see if you have continuity. It could also be your thermostat, but I would bet that it's the element.marine_man
Scott K
I too think it is the element

papabear
Sounds like you may be overheating your unit. that reset button is attached to a thermostat that kicks out when it gets too hot. so it is not the elements. if you have kids have a plumber check this out your water is getting too hot and can scald them. to fix flush the tank with the boiler drain at the bottom, make sure the temp is not set too high (thats by the reset button) and if continues call a plumber.
