Shimano line for 2008

I'm a little late on this topic seeing that these prodcuts have been out for a month or two now, but wow am I impressed! I just started working in a fishing retail store and have been playing around with a lot of the new products for this year. I can't believe how light some of shimano's new reels are. Its almost stupid how light the Chronarch mg and Core mg reels are. Granted they are a little more pricey, I am seriously considering picking one of these up. The Calias has a computer in it, thats nuts! Its amazing how far the fising industry has come in even the past few years. I felt like I had been left behind when I was looking at those reels. Oh yeah, their new rods are sweet too! And this is coming from a person who owns only one shimano reel.

thats the best part about working fishing retail. Playing with all the new stuff that comes in. The deals you get on the product is a nice added bonus, too.

I find it hard to believe that the Calias reel with the micro computer is going to really help you catch more fish than say a Curado. There comes a point when you have to ask how much is too much. But then the new Core reel, looks like it is pretty awesome, a bit out of my price range though. For now, I will stick to Citicas and Curados.

I do think that Shimano makes the best reels out there though. I have a good collection right now and love each one for a different reason.

polarsusd, I agree 100% with you on that fact that its doesn't help you catch more fish. I just find it crazy that the calias can automatically modify the speed of your spool during the cast, meaning there is no need to thumb the spool manually (not that people still wouldn't)

Yeah, I like to feel what the reel is doing for me, and if someone buys one, and uses it and gets comfortable, do you forget to thumb it when you switch back over to the Curado or Citica. I guess it is a niche market kinda thing. Give em to the pros, and hope some guys with bucks get jelous. I guess I am a bargain hunter.

I would love to try out one of those DC calais and see how well it actually works.

I do own a regular calais and while it is a very nice looking reel and is super smooth I find myself using my lower priced shimanos more often. For some reason I cant skip or pitch very effectively with the darn thing. Is their such a thing a being too smooth? I could probably just use a little more practice...

But that just goes to show that just because you're paying more doesnt necessarily mean it will help you catch more fish.

As translated for me by RK: The Shimano rebates offered now mean sales were slow in 2007! Hard to pump more into the supply chain when there's already inventory on the store shelves.

So, if the $80 to $200 reels are slow in sales, how will these high end pricepoint reels do?

I agree with those above, I'd be quite happy if I had nothing but Curados and Citicas to use. Great reels that hold up, after all, Shimano is a gear company!

as with anything in the outdoor industry. The higher end products follow the economy. I will say this.. I worked the sportshow this last weekend in Duluth... we sold more saros and stradic(new spinning reels priced over $100) and citica and curado than the low end reels.. I dont think we even sold a baitcaster under $100 all weekend...

I myself ordered 2 of the new Core to play with this year, one flipping one non flipping.. I also have one of the new stradic coming as well. I also fell in love with a combo that I will save up for and buy at the show.. 6'8"M Cumara rod with a Mag 50 Cronarch.. holy cow was this combo light!
