Ammo for boars?

I'm heading to San Antonio in April for a wild pig hunt. I've got a 450 Marlin rifle as my main weapon. I'm also bringing along my 40 cal Glock as a side arm in case things get hairy with a p.o'ed boar.

Which ammo would you use for this? I has to be able to penetrate a tough, ornery pig.

Also, what is your favorite home defense round in 40 S&W?

We've been going to TX for the last 7 years hunting wild hogs and have found it is more about shot placement than power. I usually shoot 140-150gr bullets out of my .270. Some guys shoot their AR's with .223 ammo, not sure on the grains. We just try to shoot them in the head/behind the ear area. That way they drop and you don't have to track. One year a guy shot one with a .300 ultramag in the shoulder/chest. We found large bone fragments at the spot it was and trailed the blood over a mile before it dried up and we never found the hog.

They are tough, tough animals. They can smell and hear better than a whitetail and are probably spookier too. Their big downfall is there sight is pretty bad. If you are quiet and have the wind in your favor you are set! They are an absolute blast to hunt!! My group just got back on saturday, they shot 23 pigs for 12 guys. I didn't get to go with this year because of work mad.gif. Working for a living really stinks!!
