New Northern Combo

I'm looking to do some more northern fishing this summer and woulc like a dedicated rod/reel combo. I'm not looking to spend much because I'm a college student but somewhere in the 50-75 range would be nice! I'm not looking for anything too fancy, just something to get the job done. Let me know what action, weight, reel type (spinning, batcasting?) would be best. thanks for all the help!!

My $.02...

Go with a longer rod say 6.5-7 feet in a medium heavy action and a fast tip. I say medium heavy because you will get better casting and "feel" with a lighter rod and by going with a longer rod you will still have the backbone to get away with it.

Baitcasting is the way to go. I'm an old Abu Garcia fan so you can probably already tell what reel I'm recomending.

As far as a place to go, try Cabela's. A lot of times you can find their "brand" products for cheaper and end up with a higher quality than you expected for the price.

Hope this helps.

I'd go with what BigGrassBass said. I, too, am an Abu Garcia fan. My northern casting combo features a 6.5' med/heavy rod and an Ambassadeur reel.

I have a separate combo for trolling northerns...with a rod that is a bit stiffer, and a low-profile baitcasting reel.
