Coyote Time!

i was out lastnight i called in three yotes and a red fox 2 yotes winded us buddy missed the other and i bagged the red 3 locations 4 critters it was a blast it was my friends first time out and now he is an addict lol

I have a question about legal firearms for coyote, as well as shooting times: can a guy use any type of firearm statewide, or are there restrictions such as those imposed with the deer season; and can a guy shoot these varmints at any time of day? I have been thinking about getting into this and I haven't seen anything solid in the rule book.

Yes you can use any type of firearm, but there are state lands which restrict what kind of firearms you can use, so double check on that. I have yet to take one with my 17hmr, I have used it on a farm that I know have fox on it, otherwise I use a .223 and I just got a .243. 22-250 is popular as well. You can use your deer rifle, but it might make a big exit hole.

At night time, you can use a handheld light, but you have to be using a shotgun, so you would want to use buckshot and full or tighter choke tube. Yes you can shoot varmints at any time of the day, but kind of like deer hunting, early morning and sundown seem to be best. BUT like deer hunting, you can get them in the middle of the day as well.

Not sure where you are going to hunt, but I see you are in Stacy, so if you go up around hinkley, you will have to watch out for timberwolves, you don't want to shoot one of them. A friend of mine was calling east of Hinkley and had 2 timberwolves come in.

Thanks for the good info, picks! There are a few spots I would like to try, mostly state land in Pine county. I have the blues after the "normal" hunting season, and 'yotes might just be the cure! Are they any good eatin'? Just kidding, but seriously, after the kill is there a market for them (bounty, furrier, or otherwise)? If so, do furriers want them in the round or skinned? I'm sure there is a post somewhere that addresses all of this, but too late.

John, find a local fur buyer and ask him how he wants them. Some want them skinned and stretched, some want them in the round. they are starting to ramp up for whooopee time (mating season) and the fur buyers at Weibke in Eitzen were about done buying them a couple weeks ago since the furs get all rubbed. I have heard of prices as high as 20 bucks this winter. Good Luck in Nembadji and Solara, there is a population of wolves in Nemadji, I believe I read that on the dnr HSOforum. Have fun

AT NIGHT WITH A SPOT LIGHT AND HUNTING YOU MUST USE SHOT GUN YOU DONT HAVE TO USE BUCK I HAVE KILLED THEM WITH LESS BUT YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 200 FEET FROM A VEHICLE!!!!!!!!!! YOU CAN HUNT THEM AT NIGHT WITH OUT A SPOT LIGHT AS WELL last sat no light no moon and got that fox and seen three others!! Carlos Avery has tons and tons of yotes but mores pressure and there is a time limits on hunting there i believe it is 5 am to 10 pm up north i saw one yote deer hunting you will have better for fox up there and cats but that is closed and wolves are thick

early morning to hour or two after sunrise is good and night after dark is my favorite and evening is ok but they are most likly to check out the noise or area of where the sound was coming from after dark.. i think they like it because there is more cover in the dark....

As for price i have been getting 25 to 35 for yotes depends on buyers too...but after feb price will go down on account to quality of fur.. but it is a blast i love it and i am gonna guide a few guys from my dads work in two weeks around my place hope some come in ill let you know how we do and i am goin out this sat as well i will have pics posted on "What did you catch today" check um out good luck to you and i have told you almost all that i know READ REGS some of your questions can be answered in that and dont just read it once it takes me a few times to get it all but fox closes in march so watch out!!! if you hunt later than that for yotes and talk to cattle farmers for permission they hate yotes!!!!
