Hi all,

I am planning a trip to the show in December and wonder, will there be any places to ice fish along the way??

In a traditional year, is there ice between Montana and MNPLS and where? We would like to spend at least 2 days at a nice resort and dont mind going a little out of our way north to do so.

So, Devils Lake? Milacs? Leech?? How bout some resort recomendations along the way??
We will have the wives along so want someplace fairly nice, they will be fishing but we want them to be comfortable and occupied if they choose to just relax for a day too.

Thats a long way off...depends on how cold it gets. Last year low had good ice and most of the bays of bigger lakes like Mille Lacs had fishable ice, it all depended on the wind also on the bigger lakes... You will have to plan on a day to day thing dependent on weather.

I think you would be better off staying in a centralized location and being mobil. I was ice fishing in aitkin county thanksgiving weekend last year. The year before that, I didn't ice fish till late december. Stay as north as you can and you should be good. Think about the detroit lakes area maybe. Smaller lakes will be a safer bet than big lakes like mille lacs, leech. Just one mans opinion.

Hey mj,
how far in advance do you have to make your plans?

That early in the season it's a crap shoot. Best bets are smaller shallow lakes or shallow southern bays on bigger lakes. They usually freeze over 1st. The further north ups your odds as well.

The temp and wind will determine what works for you that early in the season.

Well, we are planning on going, but if its an odd year that no lakes are froze by Tday, then we may cancel. I was just wondering what we would be looking at if its a "normal" year. We can probably wait until Thanksgiving to make our plans for sure.

Biggest thing is where to stay if we do go, I can make reservations for MNPLs, but want some ideas for some resorts to stay a day or two close to fishing.

I know its 2.5 months away but the early bird gets the worm!!(and the best deals)

Mike, depending on the weather of course I'm usually able to walk onto LOTW somewhere by Turkey day. Last year I think it was right around the 25th or 26th of November that I could walk safely {I thought} onto 4-mile bay and fish Walleye. I had been tip-up fishing for Pike a week or so prior to that over on Z-bay.

Keep an eye here for reports as the fall progresses, and if you can schedule your trip so you can fish on your way home maybe?

Regards....Fisky

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
