I started ice fishing for lakers last year and i have been using my northern rod for them but would like to go out and buy a nice rod and reel specifily for lakers. Any suggestions???

to be honest, a lot of guys use a northern style rod for fishing lakers. Check out Scotty's Custom Predator Series, or Jason Mitchell Elite Series 36MH Mackinaw for a nice laker rod. match it up with a baitcast reel and you should be set.

I agree with DEADhead as I own both of these rods and they have performed flawlessly on the lakers. Both very well built an will handle the heavier lures also.

A lot of guys use their summer reels on those rods. It really is a matter of preference and budget. Since you won't be casting, you probably don't need the $1k shimano with the computer controlled braking system, Just a reel with a good drag, becuase basically the reel is just a line holder.
