New to spearing

I am new to spearing and had some questions. What do most ppl cut there holes with, chainsaw or ice saw? What would a decent spear cost? Lastly what would come ice hooks to pull ice chunks out with cost?

I myself cut my hole with a ice saw. Very simple to use, and less mess. There are alot of spears out there that a guy can get for some good money. I spent a bit more, but i use mine alot and wanted it to last a long time. There are companys out there that make ice thogs and spears.

I would go with the ice saw or an auger, i tried the chain saw and it is a mess. I think that sportsmans wharehouse has a pretty good selection of spears. You should be able to get into a decent one for around 60 bucks as far as i can remember.

Come out to the Get-to-Gator on Big Lake Sunday morning.

I am sure people will let you help them cut their holes and see just how it is done.

If you have a fishing license and a spearing license I will have some extra spears along and possibly an extra house to sit in and you can give it a try. That will give you a real “hands on” to see if you like it.

I just want to warn you... Once you see a big pike come in, you will be reaching for your pocket book to get all the stuff to start spearing with on your own.

If you are just starting out I recommend getting stuff used and see if you like it or not. If you watch different places you can get some real deals on stuff.

mrklean you better jump on that offer from merkman if it isn’t too far to go. Gas and a spearing license will be pretty cheap to find out if you like it or not. You wouldn’t need the spearing license if you wanted to just sit and watch.

i want to see an ice saw in operation. about the only toy i dont have yet so im real interested in seeing how it works.

I'm new to spearing too. I spent about $200 to get started. I already had a fish house and auger so I picked up an ice saw, a spear, and some decoys. That's enough gear to cut a hole and be able to spear. Last week I spent another $100 on a nice chisel and a set of ice tongs. I got by without them before but they should be nice to have. Hope that gives you some idea of the cost.
