What resort to take Grandpa and my oldest son in May or June

Recommended Posts

We three, have never fished together - would like to take them to a quality resort in Minnesota on waters holding hammer handle walleye and eater perch - something we can catch enough of to make it fun for one and full for all.

Thank you for your suggestions.

There are several good lakes around our state. It would really help to plan your event later but I don't know what the resorts bookings look like know.

Good Places: Lake of the Woods. By far the best walleye fisherie in the state. If you get a guide, bring some pain killers with.

Gull Lake: It's been pretty good these past couple of years

Winnie: Lots of perch and walleyes

Mille Lacs: Can be hit or miss depending on several factors.

Anohter option that could be fun is a camping trip out to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

There are a lot of good places to fish in out state, just keep checking in on the reports. Late ice reports can usually indicated the trend for the spring.

I think something in the Leech Lake / Walker area might be good for you too. The problem you might run into on lakes like Leech or Winnie or Mille Lacs is they can get pretty bouncy and that might take some of the fun out of your trip. A smaller, less known lake might be better.

One you might want to check out is Sand Lake, which is NW of Grand Rapids and E of Winnie. I've never fished it but I've heard that it's a great lake for multi-species fishing, and it should be pretty wind-protected. If you search back through the Deer River forum you will find some info on it, last spring there was a lot of talk about the high limit / experimental regs on smaller pike and Lakewood Lodge was posting some fishing info. You can check out Lakewood Lodge from the link on the Deer River forum, it sounds like they're a nice family-oriented resort.

AAL, if you chose where you fish and when you fish you should be fine in your boat. Generally around that time of the year the winds are coming out of the W-SW as we start to warm up. With that in mind, looking at a resort on the east side of anylake will allow you to have more "fishing hours" instead of waiting for the wind to calm down.

PerchJerker also gives a very good lake. Leech can be very good all year long. The lake has many seculded bays that can offer very good fishing when access to the main lake is limited.
